The Administrative Data Research Network was an ESRC-funded project that ran from October 2013 to July 2018. It is currently at the end of its funding cycle and is no longer taking applications. Administrative data research will be taken forward in a new project, to be launched later in 2018.

This archival website reflects the state of play at the end of the project in July 2018. All content has been frozen and may not be up to date.

Administrative data

Government departments and agencies build up administrative data collections during their day-to-day activities. They routinely gather information when registering people or carrying out transactions, or for record keeping – usually when delivering a service.

Administrative data can include:

  • social security payment records
  • educational attainment records
  • health records
  • court records
  • tax records

Linking these data collections together can give us an in-depth and accurate picture of society which is extremely valuable for social and economic research.

The findings have the potential to enable maximum impact of research by significantly influencing future government policy and how politicians and others evaluate existing policies.
