The ADS legal team are based at HeLEX (the Centre for Health, Law and Emerging Technologies at the University of Oxford). The team monitors and analyses the evolving legal landscape to understand the implications for research that uses administrative data. They also provide academic advice and good practice guidance on legal and regulatory matters arising from the Network’s activities.
The team is led by Professor Jane Kaye, who is also the Director of HeLEX. She is an expert on the relationships between law, ethics and emerging technologies in health.
Dr Jessica Bell and Dr Heather Gowans produced the guide “Legal Issues for ADRN Users” in 2016 and gave a first insight in the changes that will come with the implementation of the Digital Economy Act 2017.
The team was recently joined by Miranda Mourby, a Researcher in Law who specialises in UK data protection law and how public authorities can share information for research purposes.
PhD students Stergios Aidinlis and Hannah Smith have also recently joined the ADS legal team. Stergios is examining the impact of the formal legal framework and other factors on administrative data sharing for research in the UK. Hannah is researching how the law can protect and advance the privacy and other expectations of individuals whilst also promoting the public good.
