The Administrative Data Research Network was an ESRC-funded project that ran from October 2013 to July 2018. It is currently at the end of its funding cycle and is no longer taking applications. Administrative data research will be taken forward in a new project, which was launched at the end of 2018.

The Administrative Data Research Centre Wales (ADRC-W) is based at the new, purpose-built Data Science Building at Swansea University and in WISERD premises at Cardiff University.

Swansea University

The new £8 million Data Science Building has become a world-class centre for population data science research, professional training and development. The work carried out within the building has a strong focus on public engagement to ensure that the benefits of such activities are acceptable and visible.

The Data Science Building provides a state of the art environment for the promotion of interdisciplinary innovation through its powerful and robust data linkage and analysis facilities, cutting-edge technology and expert staff. This environment allows academics and researchers from a range of organisations including government and the NHS, to work together on world-leading data science in a secure environment.

Cardiff University

The ADRC-W offices in Cardiff University are equipped with certified physical security upgrades to control access and activities that are monitored to ensure security is of a high standard. Offices are also being equipped with robust physical and information security controls to ensure that physical access and operational activities are monitored and controlled at all times.

There is a secure Safe Setting environment linked securely with the Data Science Building at Swansea University, providing a training and research space that allows supervised secure access to data.

Data Security

Data security is at the forefront of all work carried out by ADRC-W.

Information security is central to the construction of the Data Science Building, with measures including a highly secure server room for the operation and management of critical information processing and storage infrastructure and a Safe Setting environment to facilitate the safe, secure and monitored access to de-identified linked data by approved and accredited researchers.

These facilities, connected by secure state of the art communications technology, will allow the building to house information equivalent to HMG IA** information asset classification ‘OFFICIAL / OFFICIAL SENSITIVE’.

The Data Science Building has been made possible with funding from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Welsh Government.

Sure Training

Before you are allowed to access any data in our secure environments, you will be required to complete our Safe Users of Research data Environment Training - also known as SURE training.
