The Administrative Data Research Network is an ESRC-funded project that ran from October 2013 - July 2018. It is currently at the end of its funding cycle and is no longer taking applications. Administrative data research will be taken forward in a new project, to be launched later in 2018.

Abstract

  • Abstract copyright ADRN.

The SQA Examination Results in Scottish Schools dataset collects information on Scottish pupil attainment from 2002. Information collected for this dataset includes the Scottish Candidate Number, examination subject, stage, and result. The data for the current attainment dataset are collected by the Scottish Qualifications Authority and then passed to the Scottish Government each year so that more in depth analysis can be carried out with the other education datasets that they hold.

More specifically, the SQA examination results in Scottish Schools dataset provides data on examination results of pupils in publicly funded schools at the end of both compulsory and staying on education in each year. Data are available from 2002 onwards. They are collected at the end of June of each year and information is published by the Scottish Government in September.

Attainment comparisons between the Scottish Education system and other parts of the UK should be treated with caution – differing examination systems make comparisons difficult. Staying on rates may affect the potential of a year group to gain awards in S5 and S6. A low staying on rate may be part of the explanation for a low percentage of awards at these stages.

Before 2006/07 attainment statistics were based on the presenting centre only, i.e. the centre where a student studied for and took the exam. From 2006/07 all awards are credited to the school or college at which a pupil is based. As the proportion of exams taken at centres other than where the student studied this should make little effect on any outcome.

Between the academic years 2005/06 and 2006/07 some changes were made to National Qualifications which may affect attainment figures in 2007 and future years. Moreover, it should be noted that the Scottish Government are implementing changes to the curriculum in Scotland (Curriculum for Excellence) in 2010. This may impact on the precise format of data available from 2011 onwards.

    Research Usage and Linkage

The SQA examination results in Scottish Schools is generally used in conjunction with other educational datasets to provide a more in depth picture of educational progress of Scottish Pupils. For example, it has been used to research attainment outcomes of looked after children and young people, gender, disability and ethnicity and more generally, to evidence and shape government policy in Scotland.

The SQA examination results in Scottish Schools contain the Scottish Candidate number (a unique number allocated to each pupil by the Scottish Qualifications Authority at Primary 1). In theory, this field will allow you to link to the other main Scottish Education datasets including the Pupil Census, Attendance and Absence survey and Exclusion Survey. This dataset cannot be linked to the Free School Meals Survey. From 2007, the SQA examination results in Scottish Schools data have been included in the Scottish Longitudinal Study.
