The Administrative Data Research Network was an ESRC-funded project that ran from October 2013 to July 2018. It is currently at the end of its funding cycle and is no longer taking applications. Administrative data research will be taken forward in a new project, which was launched at the end of 2018.

Eligibility criteria

Eligibility criteria

Both researchers and their projects were held up against strict eligibility criteria.

Researchers must

  • be ‘fit and proper’
  • have the necessary expertise to do the work (or, in the case of PhD students, have expert guidance available)
  • be affiliated with a UK academic institution, government organisation or an independent research organisation eligible for RCUK funding
  • not previously have been banned from using the Network or any affiliated organisations
  • successfully complete specialist training course that ensures they know how to handle sensitive data responsibly, ethically, lawfully and securely

The research projects must

  • demonstrate administrative data is essential and the information they need cannot be found elsewhere
  • be feasible
  • have passed formal ethical review
  • demonstrate potential public benefit
  • demonstrate scientific merit
  • have a non-commercial purpose
