The Administrative Data Research Network was an ESRC-funded project that ran from October 2013 to July 2018. It is currently at the end of its funding cycle and is no longer taking applications. Administrative data research will be taken forward in a new project, which was launched at the end of 2018.

The Network operated according to the principles of the “5 Safes of Data Sharing”, which are explained by this video created by the UK Data Service.

Safe data

Administrative data is, by its very nature, very detailed and therefore very sensitive. It contains a lot of directly or indirectly identifying information about individuals and organisations.

To ensure the safety of the data as much as possible, the data are de-identified and linked or matched by a trusted third party, such as the Office for National Statistics (ONS) or the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA). The process is explained in this video:
