The Administrative Data Research Network was an ESRC-funded project that ran from October 2013 to July 2018. It is currently at the end of its funding cycle and is no longer taking applications. Administrative data research will be taken forward in a new project, which was launched at the end of 2018.

Security standards

The Network operated according to the principles of the “5 Safes of Data Sharing”, which are explained by this video created by the UK Data Service.

Safe people

The Network checked researchers’ backgrounds to ensure that they

  • were ‘fit and proper’
  • had the necessary expertise to do the work (or, in the case of PhD students, have expert guidance available)
  • were affiliated with a UK academic institution, government organisation or an independent research organisation eligible for RCUK funding
  • had not previously been banned from using the Network or any affiliated organisations

Researchers also needed to take a specialist training course that ensured they knew how to handle sensitive data responsibly, ethically, lawfully and securely.
