The Network checked researchers’ backgrounds to ensure that they
- were ‘fit and proper’
- had the necessary expertise to do the work (or, in the case of PhD students, have expert guidance available)
- were affiliated with a UK academic institution, government organisation or an independent research organisation eligible for RCUK funding
- had not previously been banned from using the Network or any affiliated organisations
Researchers also needed to take a specialist training course that ensured they knew how to handle sensitive data responsibly, ethically, lawfully and securely.
