The Administrative Data Research Network was an ESRC-funded project that ran from October 2013 to July 2018. It is currently at the end of its funding cycle and is no longer taking applications. Administrative data research will be taken forward in a new project, which was launched at the end of 2018.

Before researchers were allowed to access any data in our secure environments, they were required to complete our Safe Users of Research data Environment Training - also known as SURE training.

This training course was designed to help researchers understand the sensitivities around using administrative data, how to handle sensitive data safely, lawfully and responsibly.

The course takes one day, and researchers had to complete a test at the end of it. They could only access data after you pass the test.

Training was organised by one of our Administrative Data Research Centres. It was developed together with the UK Data Service and the Office for National Statistics.

It includes face-to-face training on:

  • the legislation relating to administrative data
  • data security and researchers’ responsibilities
  • the penalties for data breaches
