Evaluating the impacts of Welsh Government funded schemes designed to improve the energy efficiency of the homes of low income households on health outcomes through the use of existing data

Research overview

The project aims to use existing data to evaluate Welsh Government-funded schemes to improve energy efficiency in the homes of low income households. It will help the Welsh Government to understand the impact of fuel poverty on people’s health and to evaluate the strategy to reduce the number of people living in fuel poverty in Wales, with a view to shaping future policy.

How the research helps

Improving the fuel poverty strategy can help to reduce the number of people living in fuel poverty and improve the health and wellbeing of people living in Wales.

The research

The aim of this project is to use existing data to evaluate the health impacts of Welsh Government funded schemes designed to improve the energy efficiency of the homes of low income households. Building upon previous work done in this area, this project will assist the Welsh Government to understand the impact of fuel poverty on people’s health and to evaluate the strategy to reduce the number of people living in fuel poverty in Wales.

The results of this research will further our understanding of how well the eligibility criteria have succeeded in targeting those who are at greatest risk of experiencing adverse health impacts as a result of living in fuel poverty and will provide evidence that will feed into policy decision-making with regard to the future direction of the strategy.

Improvements to the fuel poverty strategy will increase its potential to effectively reduce the numbers of people living in fuel poverty and thus improve the health and wellbeing of people living in Wales.

Findings of the research were published on 5 April 2017.
