‘Talk Big Data’ Series: Big Data. Big Questions
Running through the autumn, the first of the Talk Big Data series began last Thursday the 13 October at the University of Essex with the theme ‘Charities, Humanitarian Action and Big Data: Friend or Foe?’
Organised by the ADRN in collaboration with the Business and Local Government Data Research Centre and Human Rights, Big Data and Technology project, members of the public and the university community were welcomed to ‘Any Questions’ style panel discussions involving high profile speakers from ‘Amnesty International’, ‘eyeWItness to Atrocities’ and ‘DataKind’.
Left to right: Professor Geoff Gilbert (Professor of Law and Deputy of the ‘Advancing Human Rights and Humanitarian Responses’ Work Stream of the Human Rights, Big Data and Technology Project, University of Essex), Joanne Mariner (Senior Crisis Response Advisor, Amnesty International), Duncan Ross (Data and Analytics Director, TES Global and Director and Chair of Trustees, DataKind UK) and Wendy Betts (Director of eyeWitness to Atrocities, International Bar Association)
Discussions revolved around how charities and humanitarian organisations are using big data both at home and abroad in relation to human rights, humanitarian responses, social justice and equality. The audience heard the panel’s opinions and experiences relating to the use of big data to map, monitor and document human rights violations; to strengthen the ability of humanitarian actors to respond to humanitarian disasters be they conflict driven or through natural occurrence.
The series has five different themes and has been designed to promote an understanding of what big data is and highlight the human elements of how big data shape our world as well as to promote the opportunities for research that the three ESRC funded projects offer.
Full video footage of each event will be available on our website.
Anyone who is interested but cannot attend the next event: Big Data in Business: Help or Hindrance this Thursday 20 October (5.30-7.00pm) can watch and hear the discussion by using the ‘GoToMeeting’ link.
