The Administrative Data Research Network was an ESRC-funded project that ran from October 2013 to July 2018. It is currently at the end of its funding cycle and is no longer taking applications. Administrative data research will be taken forward in a new project, which was launched at the end of 2018.

Administrative data: Achievements and challenges 

Lord David Willetts, Executive Chair of the Resolution Foundation and former Universities Minister, talks about the achievements and the challenges around using Administrative Data.


We have now got secure data centres in the four parts of the United Kingdom offering a service to researchers. And that should not be taken for granted. It was not absolutely clear five years ago we would get this far this fast. That’s the good news.

The less good news is that there isn’t as much data in them for researchers to analyse as there should be because Whitehall departments are proving, sadly, reluctant to make their data available.

So we’ve got the capacity, we just need the throughput of the data, and I think that is a matter of building confidence in Whitehall and building awareness in Whitehall. But that’s where we need to do more
